CMS - Content Management Systems

Why a CMS?   A CMS is a system that enables users to maintain the content of their website themselves with limited effort. If your site is build around a CMS, you can easily keep your web site up to date, creating news items, stories, web logs and announcements, using images and other content.

Using a CMS opens ways for interaction or collaboration, that are hard to establish with traditional web sites. A site using a CMS may be opened for visitors or members to register and log on, enabling them to post comments, blogs, or stories.

A CMS makes it possible to maintain a site with delegated maintainers, where each is responsible for a part of the site.

Systems

Bureau Digitekst works with three CMS systems. They are all open source, wich means that the source code is available, and may be adapted if needed for a specific requirements.

- Drupal - a relatively simple CMS, providing quick results. Nevertheless it has lots of possibilities. In its basic installation it offers, among others, the creation of blogs, pages, stories and forums. Many modules are developed by the Drupal community, offering extended functions. Various site templates are available that can be changed to a customized look and feel.
- Joomla/Mambo - another very expandable CMS, offering many community-added modules, among them web shop functions.
- Typo3 - a high quality CMS originating in Denmark. Typo3 is generally regarded a 'difficult' CMS. It differs from many other systems, in that it is actually an environment, in wich highly customized site navigation and pages can be created. Typo3 is being used for many professional sites in Scandinavia and Germany.

Security   Using a CMS brings about a certain security risk; hackers might get access to the system to create unwanted content, send unsolicited mail or worse. To mitigate this risk some measures are necessary, like regular updating and patching of the system, and maintaining diligent policies with regard to logon data.
